CURATORIAL STATEMENT
Under the title The desire for being many, the Berlin based spaces Neun Kelche and alpha nova & galerie futura and the artist Lillian Morrissey, will present a joint exhibition across multiple spaces and a programme of events for the period October-December 2025. Platforming intersectional FLINTA* artistic, activist and discursive critical approaches, the project will address the highly topical issue of reactionary, anti-feminist and LGBTQI-phobic backlash in contemporary right-wing politics. This trend can not only be observed internationally, but is also gaining ground across the EU and within German-speaking countries in the form of laws (e.g. the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media banned gendering in his office), the enormous success of anti-feminist influencers on social media channels, and the massive strengthening of right-wing parties and fascist movements in the consciousness of society as a whole–where this ideology is ultimately becoming normalised.
The project The desire for being many not only aims to take stock and highlight the dramatic reactionary-antifeminist developments of recent years, but also to create counter-publics and strengthen alliances of solidarity in the spirit of author, philosopher and activist Ewa Majewska. To this end, artists and cultural workers living mainly in Berlin will participate in the exhibition and the (artistic-discursive) supporting programme with an artistic (activist) contribution based on their often transnational background of experience. The result is a polyphonic, diverse network of positions that serves as a starting point for resistance against Backlash 2.0.
KURATORISCHES STATEMENT
Unter dem Titel The desire for being many plant der Projektraum Neun Kelche in Kollaboration mit dem Raum alpha nova & galerie futura und der Künstlerin Lillian Morrissey für den Zeitraum Oktober-Dezember 2025 eine raumübergreifende Ausstellung und ein Veranstaltungsprogramm, die sich mittels künstlerischer, aktivistischer und diskursiver Zugänge und Formate dem hochaktuellen Themenkomplex des rechts-reaktionären, antifeministischen und neo-patriarchalen Backlashs widmen. Dieser ist nicht nur international in Ländern wie den USA, Russland, Ungarn, Uganda oder Indien - um nur einige wenige Beispiele zu nennen - zu beobachten, sondern setzt sich auch im deutschsprachigen Raum in Form von Gesetzen (z.B. Verbot des Genderns in Bayerischen (Hoch-)Schulen und Behörden), dem enormen Erfolg antifeministischer Influencer*innen auf Social Media Kanälen und dem massiven Erstarken rechter Parteien und faschistischer Bewegungen im gesamtgesellschaftlichen Bewusstsein durch - wo er letztendlich eine Normalisierung erfährt.
Das Projekt The desire for being many intendiert nicht nur eine Bestandsaufnahme vorzunehmen und die dramatischen reaktionär-antifeministischen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre aufzuzeigen, sondern im Sinne Ewa Majewskas Gegenöffentlichkeiten zu schaffen und solidarische Bündnisse zu stärken. Dazu werden in Berlin lebende Künstler*innen und Kulturarbeiter*innen eingeladen, jeweils von ihrem vielfach transnational geprägten Erfahrungshintergrund ausgehend mit einem künstlerischen(-aktivistischen) Beitrag zur Ausstellung und zum (künstlerisch-diskursiven) Rahmenprogramm beizutragen. So ergibt sich ein vielstimmiges, diverses Geflecht an Positionierungen und Positionen, das als Ausgangspunkt dient, um dem Backlash 2.0 den Kampf anzusagen.
